Major mortgage lenders have agreed to streamline and speed up the process for assisting distressed homeowners, according to new guidelines set to be released today.
The guidelines will address the complaints of homeowners and housing counselors that even as foreclosures climb, lenders remain difficult to work with and can take months to approve a request or even acknowledge that a homeowner has asked for help. In the meantime, borrowers fall further behind in their payments and grow more frustrated.

Senior members of the Congressional Black Caucus yesterday criticized a compromise plan for the proposed merger of the XM and Sirius satellite radio companies, saying the deal does not provide enough opportunities for minority-owned programming.
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin J. Martin said over the weekend that he would support the merger after XM Satellite Radio Holdings and Sirius Satellite Radio voluntarily agreed, among a series of other concessions, to lease 4 percent of their radio spectrums, or 12 channels, for programming run by minorities and women.

transformed Arnold Schwarzenegger into "The Terminator" and
brought dinosaurs to life in the "Jurassic Park" films, has
died at age 62, his studio said on Monday.
