International Business Machines Corp.'s posted a sharp increase in profit, as expected, with strength in software. But the technology giant's overseas revenue growth slowed from previous quarters, no longer offsetting as much of the weakness in the U.S.
IBM had issued preliminary results for its third quarter last week, looking to calm investor fears amid the financial turmoil. It said net income rose 20% to $2.82 billion, or $2.05 per share, from $2.36 billion, or $1.68 a share, in the same quarter last year earlier. Revenue rose 5% to $25.3 billion.
Capital One Financial Corp. swung to a third-quarter profit as the bank and credit-card issuer saw increases in deposits and local banking segment profits.
Shares climbed 2.6% to $39.70 in after-hours trading.
